Nordskiffer Villa W in Kullavik (Gothenburg) Project

NORDSKIFFER AB continues to  be the lead source for roofing and cladding projects in Sweden.  The pictures below prove just how stunning Vermont Slate Cladding looks when installed, as shown on this building in the town of Gothenburg, Sweden.

One of the many benefits of slate cladding is the little or no maintenance required, while it lasts for 100’s of years.

This particular Villa W in Kullavik (Gothenburg) cladding project, was one of three finalist in the Stenpriset 2014 architectural competition.

Architect Gert Wingardh was nominated for his new thinking and breach of the conventional, using natural stone (Vermont Slate) in both the facade and roof.

EXPLANATORY STATEMENT
Villa W in Kullavik

“A private residence with monumental expression”

“With its sophisticated form, Villa W is an exciting landmark. The house is both modern and monumental. The private residence is in violation of the conventions, because both facades and ceilings are completely shaded. The facade of the slate plays against the surrounding sea and the dark, almost shy color of the slate meets the sky and creates a dramatic impression. The architect’s use of natural stone in Villa W shows a new thinking.

Each arm in the carcass’s squided octopus form fills its own function in a building that will serve as a residence and art gallery. Villa W has retrieved its black-and-white slate from Wales, whose stone already the ancient Romans used for its construction. The slate can be cut into thin pieces and cover large areas. The building is fully dressed in slate where the roof can be treated and constitutes an exhibition space for art.

With its irregular clown surface, the sun sets against the façade and gives it a living character. Even the land cover in Ölandssten plays against the slate. The hard surfaces of stone and glass of Villa W meet in a dramatic and exciting way the greenery and the sea.

In addition to its interesting technical characteristics, slate is an affordable natural stone, which creates good conditions for innovative privately owned items with extensive use of stone. “
