The Ørland cultural centre is one of the most beautiful architectural landmarks on the coast of Norway. Not only is it breathtaking from which ever angle day or night, within its walls it houses a main hall, a cinema, a library, a school of music and performing arts and apartments.
The walls of main hall are clad in Otta phyllite, giving the space a distinctive character. In addition to making the building stand out from the surrounding flat landscape, it also gives substance to the “glass street” that runs through the interior of the building.
Three standard widths in varying lengths and with broken edges have resulted in a wall that is at the same time rigid and playful, while also prompting associations with the waves on the sea outside. At the same time the natural stone exploits the distinctive, constantly shifting light in Ørlandet by changing color and character in response to the changing light and weather conditions.
